Chats And Chai: The Positive Side Of Social Media + When To Take A Break

Hey y’all!

First things first. We have a new series on this blog! I started it so you could have a cozy, thought provoking read. Don’t be afraid to comment your opinions or thoughts on the topics, because thoughtful discussions are the aim of this new series!

So before reading any further, grab a cup of chai (or coffee, or tea, or biscuits-anything’s fine with me), find a cozy place and when you’re ready, start reading!

Today’s topic is going to be about social media. This post is going to be divided into two sections, one talking about the positive effects of social media and the other talking about when it’s time to take a break. I decided to write about this because not a lot of people talk about the positive side of social media, and also because I thought that you all need to know when it is time for you to take a break from it all. So let’s go!

The Positives

Before, I used to see Instagram as a way to flaunt your seemingly perfect life. I saw SnapChat as a waste of time. Now, not so much.

Don’t get me wrong-social media can be pretty toxic and dangerous, but mostly that’s for the people who use it the wrong way. I recently started being pretty active on social media, giving people a sneak peak into my life, and really exploring it, I realised that people have it wrong. Social media is not ALL dangerous and toxic. In fact, blogging and being active on my blog’s socials is one of the things that has kept me sane during these extremely *ahem* weird times.

Every morning, when I do my routine socials check, where I reply to messages, interact with other bloggers and influencers, and post stories, I often end sessions with a huge smile on my face. The love that goes around the community is absolutely overwhelming, and the support is so cherished ( so much cheese, I know). Before I started blogging, I had no idea there was a separate ‘blogging community’ on Instagram. It is so wonderful how I’ve connected with so may other creators and influencers, and formed so many different friendships, that make me feel so good about myself and make me feel loved.

The support system is incredible. Recently I was struggling a bit with exams, and I put up a question asking for coping tips on my Instagram Story. Within the next 15 minutes, I got at least sixteen replies, each giving me different but equally effective tips, and telling me that they had my back. It was so calming, knowing that so many people believed in me.

Social media can also increase self confidence. Some shy, introverted people may not feel comfortable standing up and giving a presentation, but with social media around, you don’t need to! People can express their ideas freely and thoughtfully, without feeling embarrassed about what other people they knew would think. They could communicate so much, without even saying a word.

Using social platforms, you can also connect to a wider audience. One Instagram story maybe viewed by at least or maybe even more than half your followers, and your message is communicated clearly.

When To Take a Break

However many positives there are, social can still be a pretty toxic place. So when you’re scrolling remember to be cautious and mindful, and take smart decisions.

Sometimes social media can be overwhelming, tiring and can take up a lot of energy. You do not ever have to feel guilty about stepping back from your socials to just have some ‘me’ time. If you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and/or burdened, you feel like too many things are going on in your life, scrolling through your socials you are constantly comparing yourself to others, and it has become tiring and an addictive habit, then maybe it is time to step back. Take a one week break from all your socials, and you’ll return feeling super refreshed and less anxious. Always prioritize yourself first.

Thank you all so much for reading and I hope you got something out of this post and managed to look at social media on the positive side as well!

What are your views on this topic? Did social media help you? If so, how? Tell me everything in the comments!

See you next Sunday, and I hope you have a wonderful week!

  1. I like how you put points in favor of both sides. I think often times social media is only seen as a negative but, it can be a supportive environment and it’s also a great way to connect with new people. I don’t really have social media for the most part because for me it became toxic and was very time consuming but, I do see the appeal!
I love these discussion type posts and would love to see more of them! 💖

    1. Thank you!! Yeah often it’s seen very negatively, but clearly those people who think that haven’t ever been a blogger on wordpress haha. I’m glad to see that you paid attention to your mental health and removed social media. You do you ❤
      Thank you so much ❤

  2. Thank you so much for sharing such a thoughtful post Anna! I love how you went in depth here and spoke so honestly. The WordPress and instagram blogging community is absolutely lovely and a place of true acceptance and belonging. It’s just so full of light and positivity! Although, of course, social media and content creation has its respective challenges. We just need to honour ourselves and our true needs in all that we do xx

    1. Aww thank you Maryam! Yep it’s so lovely and supportive and a place where we can feel like we truly belong:) And yes, it also does have it’s challenges. Thank you for coming here and writing such a nice comment ❤

  3. This is an amazing post and I completely understand where you are coming from. Since launching my blog and focusing on my instagram the love and joy I feel from being in a blogging community is amazing and makes it all worthwhile. However, there are so many times where I have to say enough is enough for one night and put my phone away as there is a very negative part of social media that can be so damaging. I guess it is all about finding a healthy balance, thank you for sharing your thoughts xxx

    1. Thank you so much! Yes, the community is so super encouraging and loving and makes it all feel worthwhile. And yep, there is definitely a negative side of social media that we shouldn’t ignore. I’m super glad to see that you put your phone away and disconnected:) Thank you so much for reading x

  4. Am drinking my Vietnamese coffee (double caffeine) teach an online course, so I can’t take a week off from screens, but I’ve tried a day or a weekend. Becoming unplugged is stronger than taking a break from Facebook, but oh my what a difference it makes and how many books get read! LOL

    1. Yes, I completely agree with you:) Sometimes people can’t take a week of screens because sometimes their schedules just don’t allow it. I’m glad to see that you’ve taken at least a day or a weekend off screens, and yes haha what a difference it makes!

  5. Nice post! I like how you talk about the positives of social media. Often, we blame social media for being bad where in fact it is us that are using it badly. We need social media to connect to other people, whether we want to admit it or not. Thanks for sharing!

Feel free to read some of my blogs 🙂

    1. Thank you for this comment! Yes, so true. As a dancer, I actually find social media very useful in communicating my thoughts:) welcome!

      Sure, will do:)

  6. That was a revelation to hear about the good side of social media!!. I’ve been asking around a bit, as to how people were finding social media since I was thinking of joining myself. And all I could hear was how annoying they found “the people there” and how judgemental it all was.

Maybe as we need is a good group of people to be with. :))

    1. I’m super glad it helped! That’s often the main reaction towards social media but i wanted to show that there is something positive:) you should totally! I put my personal account on private, and i think that helps a lot💗

Yep that really is all we need❤❤

      1. Oh wow, so do you have two accounts? I mean, one for your blog and one personal? I’m being very confused at the mo as to how I’d like to handle it. X

      2. Yep, i do x

My blog one is public, and i have to say, the support is actually incredibleeeee!

My personal one is private, so that I can control who follows me and sees my posts. I find that this really, really helps, because i rarely get weird messages in my DMs, and it’s mostly just my friends and I messing around:) No comparisons, no pressure:)

Tell me how it goes! ❤
